Chromperfect HP 5890 GC

The HP 5890 is a classic gas chromatograph first launched by Hewlett-Packard in 1984. While many have been retired, a large number remain in active service around the world. Chromperfect still supports the HP 5890 — whether via its original analog outputs or through a digital upgrade that enables full instrument control.

Digital vs. Analog Connection

  • Analog (Tigre Interface): Uses detector signal ports and remote start connectors. Allows passive data collection only, with no control over instrument parameters.

  • Digital: Requires specific hardware upgrades. Offers better signal fidelity, greater dynamic range, and full instrument control from within Chromperfect.

Requirements for Digital Compatibility

1. INET Board

  • Part number: 19257-6015

  • Installed inside the GC, all DIP switches in the UP position.

2. INET Cabling

  • Connect INET ports on the GC to the autosampler controller.

  • Must form a complete in/out loop.

  • If no autosampler is present, loop cables directly on the GC’s INET ports.

3. RS-232 Board

  • Part number: 19257-6020

  • Installed at the rear panel of the GC for serial communication with Chromperfect.

4. Firmware

  • Series A 5890: ROM 05890-80150 in socket U710, revision G or higher.

  • Series 2 5890: ROM 05890-80325 in socket U35, revision 0201 or higher.

5. 7673 Autosampler Controller (if fitted)

  • Controller card: 185946

  • Controller ROM U6: 185948-0305

  • INET card: 185946-301

Connectivity Options

Single GC:

  • Moxa Port 1100 USB to RS-232 adapter.

Multiple GCs:

  • Multiport RS-232 to Ethernet server (e.g., B+B SmartWorx Quattro).

  • Chromperfect Panta device (Ethernet to serial).

When Digital is Not Possible

If the required parts are unavailable or cost-prohibitive, Chromperfect can still collect data from the HP 5890 using the Tigre analog interface. While this method lacks control features, it remains a reliable and proven option for many labs.

Conclusion

With the correct hardware and configuration, Chromperfect can integrate the HP 5890 GC into a modern, digital workflow — or continue supporting it through analog connections. Contact our support team for help confirming compatibility or sourcing the right parts.
