How to Upload Instrument Control Files to an Agilent 7890 Gas Chromatograph

Instrument control setpoint files are a key part of Chromperfect’s ability to control GCs, HPLCs, and autosamplers. In this tutorial, we’ll look at how to upload an instrument control setpoint file for an Agilent 7890 Gas Chromatograph (GC).

Why Use Instrument Control Setpoint Files?

Every Chromperfect method must contain:

  • Runtime

  • Sampling rate

  • Detector channels

Other parameters, such as oven temperatures or inlet pressures, are stored in an instrument control setpoint file. This ensures consistency and reproducibility across analyses.

Creating the First Setpoint File

  • New setpoint files cannot be created manually (except for the HP 5890).

  • Instead, the instrument’s parameters must first be entered on the GC keypad and uploaded into Chromperfect.

  • The resulting file (e.g., .m78 for an Agilent 7890) becomes the instrument’s unique “fingerprint.”

Uploading Instrument Parameters

  1. Ensure the instrument status is set to Ready (not “Awaiting Download”).

  2. Use a method that does not already contain an instrument control file.

  3. Open the Control icon → check Show Special Features.

  4. Select the Upload tab and browse for a file name.

  5. Chromperfect will create the setpoint file with the correct extension (e.g., .m78).

Editing Setpoint Files

Once uploaded:

  • Open the file in the Chromperfect File Editor.

  • Make necessary changes and save, or use Save As to create variations.

  • Never share setpoint files between instruments — even of the same model — as configurations may differ.

Referencing Setpoint Files in Methods

To apply a setpoint file in a method:

  1. Open the Method Editor.

  2. Go to the Acquisition tab.

  3. Select the option to download a setpoint file.

  4. Browse and choose the desired .m78 file.

  5. Save the method.

Every time this method is used, Chromperfect will automatically apply the correct instrument parameters before data acquisition begins.

Conclusion; Upload Instrument Control Setpoint File

Uploading and managing instrument control setpoint files ensures that instruments like the Agilent 7890 are configured correctly for each analysis. By creating and referencing these files in Chromperfect, laboratories can streamline workflows and minimize errors.
