In this short video, we explain how to name or rename an instrument in Chromperfect and, just as importantly, what the instrument name actually represents.

You can watch the video here:

In Chromperfect, every instrument is assigned a user-defined instrument name. This name is not read from the instrument itself and it does not update automatically. Instead, it is simply a text label that you control, used to make it easy to identify different instruments within the software.

This is especially helpful in systems with multiple instruments, shared acquisition services, or multiple operators.

What the instrument name represents

The instrument name in Chromperfect is:

  • A manual text label entered by the user

  • Not taken directly from the instrument hardware

  • Not dynamic or automatically updated

Its purpose is purely identification. It allows you to give each instrument a clear, meaningful name that makes sense in your laboratory.

Where the instrument name is used

The instrument name is displayed in several places within Chromperfect, including:

  • The data acquisition program

  • Instrument selection lists

  • Monitoring and status displays

  • Chromatogram plots (if enabled)

  • Report headers and printed output

Using clear, consistent instrument names helps operators quickly confirm they are working with the correct system.

Where instrument names are defined

Instrument names are managed in the Connections dialog. For most users, this is accessed from the Chromperfect Main Menu.

How to name or rename an instrument

  1. Open the Chromperfect Main Menu

  2. Click Configure

  3. Open Connections

  4. Locate the instrument you want to name or rename

  5. Click in the Instrument Name field

  6. Enter the new name

  7. Click OK to save

Once saved, the updated instrument name will appear throughout Chromperfect, including acquisition screens, chromatogram plots, and reports.

Important notes

Renaming an instrument:

  • Does not affect existing data files

  • Does not affect methods, sequences, or licenses

  • Only changes the displayed label used for identification

Final thoughts

Instrument names are a simple but powerful way to keep your Chromperfect system organized and easy to use. Taking a moment to name instruments clearly can prevent mistakes and make daily operation more straightforward.
