Common Error on 7890 Gas Chromatography GC Instrument Not Receptive

A common issue reported by new Chromperfect users is the “Instrument Not Receptive” error when adding an Agilent 7890 Gas Chromatograph (GC). This error occurs during the first run attempt or when the instrument is in a pre-run state.

What the Error Means

The error does not indicate a connection problem. Instead, it means the instrument is not in the correct state to be downloaded with an m78 instrument control setpoint file.

Changing Status from Awaiting Download to Ready

When a new 7890 is added, its status displays Awaiting Download. To make it receptive:

  1. Select a method file without an m78 setpoint file attached.

  2. Open the Files Program → Acquisition tab to confirm no setpoint file is listed.

    • Example: use the sample file Atest.met  from the sample data folder.

  3. In the Run Program, claim the instrument and download this test method.

  4. The status will change from Awaiting Download to Ready.

Restarting the Instrument

After downloading the test method:

  • Power cycle (shut down and restart) the 7890 GC.

  • Once rebooted, the instrument will be receptive and ready for methods containing your setpoint file.

Using an Instrument Control Setpoint File

Now you can load a method that references your setpoint file (e.g., sample.m78). Chromperfect will automatically control the instrument and autosampler parameters without requiring manual entry.

Exception: Pre-Run Mode

The error can also appear if the instrument is in Pre-Run mode. Chromperfect cannot download parameters until the status changes back to Ready.

Conclusion; Agilent 7890 Instrument Not Receptive

The Agilent 7890 Instrument Not Receptive error is common when first connecting a GC in Chromperfect. By downloading a test method, cycling the power, and then applying your setpoint file, you can quickly resolve the issue and prevent future interruptions.
