Chromatography Reporting Software Barcodes for Sample Handling

Automation is essential in modern chromatography laboratories. Chromperfect has long supported tools that allow data to be shared seamlessly across the organization, but many labs still rely on manual data entry into third-party systems.

This approach is time-consuming and prone to error, especially when dealing with complex text strings, file paths, or calculated values.

With Chromperfect Version 8.2, users can now embed barcodes directly in report headers — eliminating manual typing, reducing errors, and saving valuable time.

How It Works

  • Chromperfect uses the open-source Code 128 barcode font.

  • Reports can include barcodes for any variable, calculation, or result in the report header.

  • Once printed, users simply scan the barcode into third-party software (Excel, LIMS, SAP, databases, etc.).

This reduces data entry time by a factor of ten or more, while ensuring accuracy and consistency across systems.

Applications of Chromperfect Barcode Reporting

Barcodes can represent:

  • File names and paths

  • Sample names

  • Operator details

  • Numerical results or calculations

They can be scanned into spreadsheets, laboratory databases, LIMS/SAP systems, or even back into Chromperfect itself to enter sample information. Barcodes can also be sent to label printers to maintain sample integrity throughout production and QC processes.

What You Need

  1. Barcode Scanner — Compatible with Code 128, widely available and inexpensive.

  2. Code 128 Font — Free and open source, available for download online.

  3. Chromperfect 8.2 or higher — Required for barcode functionality.

Building a Barcode Report in Chromperfect

  1. Open the File Editor → Format File.

  2. Edit an existing report or start from a blank template.

  3. Add a header section and enter:

    BC#{YourCodeHere}

    • YourCodeHere can be text, a header code, or a combination.

  4. Set the font to Code 128.

  5. Save the format file.

Barcodes will now print with your report. Adjust font size (e.g., size 26) to ensure your scanner reads correctly.

Best Practices

  • Keep barcode text short for easier scanning.

  • If scanning fails, move the scanner further from the page to capture the whole code.

  • Add the barcode report to your method file or use batch reprocessing to generate multiple reports at once.

Conclusion

By embedding barcodes in chromatography reports, Chromperfect users can dramatically reduce administrative workload and remove the risks of manual data entry.
