Chromperfect Instrument Setpoint Files: How to Upload, Open and Edit Them Correctly

Instrument setpoint files are essential when Chromperfect is used to control a digitally connected chromatograph. They contain the operating conditions that are downloaded to the instrument, including settings such as temperatures, pressures, flows, detector parameters and other instrument-specific controls.
Although the basic workflow is straightforward, new users often encounter confusion because instrument setpoint files behave differently from many other Chromperfect file types. Users may search for a separate setpoint editor, attempt to create a blank setpoint file, or try to upload settings while the instrument is still showing Awaiting Download.
This guide explains the correct workflow and the terminology used within Chromperfect.
What are instrument setpoint files?
Instrument setpoint files contain the settings used by Chromperfect to control a supported digital instrument.
The exact settings available depend on the chromatograph and the type of digital connection being used. A gas chromatograph may include controls for:
oven temperature programs
inlet temperatures and pressures
carrier-gas flow
detector temperatures
detector gases
valve events
signal selection
run time and sampling settings, where applicable
Because different instrument families expose different controls, Chromperfect does not use one universal editor layout for every instrument. Each supported instrument family or control interface has its own setpoint file format and its own editing form.
Understanding the Instrument Setpoint File Editor
Users may hear references to the Method File Editor, Calibration File Editor, Format File Editor or Setpoint File Editor.
The last term can be confusing because a setpoint file is not simply another processing file. It is the file used to control the physical instrument. For clarity, the more precise term is:

ICF and MIC instrument setpoint files
For instruments controlled through the Agilent Instrument Control Framework, also known as ICF or RC.net, the Chromperfect setpoint file normally uses the .MIC extension.
The MIC file is the ICF instrument setpoint file.
Internally, it contains the instrument settings used by the ICF control system. The ICF Setpoint Editor does not connect directly to the chromatograph. It opens and edits an existing MIC file through the Chromperfect File Editor.
To open an ICF setpoint file:
Open Chromperfect File Editor.
Choose File > Open.
Select the setpoint file option.
Locate and open the required MIC file.
Wait for the ICF editor form to initialise.
ICF forms may take several seconds to initialise. During this time, the File Editor may temporarily appear unresponsive. This does not necessarily indicate a software problem.

Why instrument setpoint files are not normally created as blank files
A common mistake is to treat an instrument setpoint file like a Method, Calibration, Format or Sequence file and attempt to create a new blank file inside File Editor.
Instrument setpoint files are different because they are tied to the physical instrument and its current hardware configuration.
The first setpoint file should normally be created by uploading the current settings from the connected chromatograph. This ensures that the file reflects the instrument that is actually connected, including its installed inlets, detectors, valves and other hardware options.
The correct rule is:
Upload first, then edit.
The normal workflow is:
Connect Chromperfect to the instrument.
Upload the current instrument settings.
Save the uploaded setpoint file.
Open that file in Chromperfect File Editor.
Review or modify the settings.
Save the file or use Save As to create another version.

What to do when the instrument shows Awaiting Download
Another common difficulty occurs when the instrument status is Awaiting Download.
Awaiting Download means that Chromperfect has not yet successfully downloaded a Method to the instrument. The system is therefore not ready to begin a normal acquisition.
In this state, users may become stuck when attempting to upload instrument setpoints.
The practical solution is normally to download a simple Method that does not already reference a setpoint file. The purpose of this download is not to create the final analytical method. It is simply to initialise the instrument connection and move the status from Awaiting Download to Ready.
The workflow is:
Open Chromperfect Acquisition.
Check the instrument status.
If the status is Awaiting Download, download a simple Method without an attached setpoint file.
Confirm that the status changes to Ready.
Upload the current setpoints from the instrument.
Save the uploaded setpoint file.
Open the file in Chromperfect File Editor.
Edit and save the file as required.
